Taxi Driver Test
Practical Test
Can you demonstrate your driving skills and show that you are a responsible and safe driver with good car control in a variety of road conditions and show consideration and understanding of the road and other road users?

Can you do this for about 40 minutes in exam conditions?

The practical driving test will start with an eyesight test (if you fail this, your test will not continue). Check the eyesight requirements and if you have any doubts about your eyesight you should have your eyes checked by an optician.

Next, you will be asked two questions, one 'show me' and one 'tell me'. These questions will enable you to demonstrate and explain how to check the basic road worthyness of the vehicle and how various controls and information are presented to the driver.

After the eyesight test and the 'show me'/'tell me' questions you will be examined on your general driving and on two reversing exercises. The reversing exercises will be chosen from:
  • reversing around a corner
  • turning in the road
  • reverse parking
  • You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise.

You will be expected to drive on several roads of different types and speed limits and with varying traffic conditions.

The examiner assesses whether you
  • can drive safely
  • know The Highway Code and can demonstrate this through your driving.
  • You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test. If at any time your examiner considers you to be a danger to other road users your test will be stopped.

You may take someone on test with you and this person must be over 16 years old and cannot take any part in the test.

Preparation is absolutely vital – get as much practice as you can

How much will it cost to sit the practical test?
